Lightning-Caused Surges
Lightning strikes are one of the most common and most destructive causes of power surges. When a strike occurs near utility equipment or a power line, millions of volts can travel through the line and into your home’s electrical system. These surges don’t just stop at the panel – they flow into every outlet, threatening TVs, computers, HVAC systems, and even refrigerators.
Utility Equipment Failures
Utility company issues are another frequent source of surges. When power is suddenly restored after an outage, the restoration process often causes voltage spikes, also known as “voltage swells.” These spikes can permanently damage sensitive electronics.
Surges can also result from accidents like tree damage to lines or vehicles striking utility poles. When this happens, a high-voltage surge can flow directly into your home, damaging devices and sometimes even the home’s wiring.

Why Ignoring Surge Protection Costs More Than You Think
Surge damage can cost homeowners thousands of dollars in lost equipment and repairs. Even smaller, unseen surges wear down devices over time, shortening the lifespan of HVAC systems, appliances, and electronics. Larger surges can destroy equipment in seconds or even start electrical fires.
To put it in perspective, the average lightning bolt carries about 300 million volts. Your appliances are built for 120-240 volts. Without protection, that gap means one strike could wipe out everything from your HVAC system to your home office setup.
Don’t wait until a devastating surge damages your home. Protect every breaker, outlet, and plug with one installation.
How Surge Protectors Keep Your Home Safe
A whole-home surge protector is installed directly on your main electrical panel. Its job is simple but critical: block or redirect dangerously high voltage away from your wiring and into the ground before it can spread through your circuits.
That means every outlet, breaker, and connected device in your home is covered. Computers, TVs, refrigerators, HVAC units, smart home equipment, and medical devices are all shielded from sudden spikes.
Small vs. Large Protectors
Small protectors (≤10,000 amps): Designed for limited coverage, protecting only a few appliances or devices.
Large protectors (≈40,000 amps): Provide whole-home protection, handling the load of a fully modern home.
Why it matters: A single large protector is quicker to install, more effective, and eliminates the need for multiple small units.

Lower Repair & Replacement Costs
Replacing one refrigerator or HVAC system can cost more than installing a surge protector for your entire home. Protecting against surges avoids costly replacements.
Reduced Maintenance Costs
Frequent surges strain wiring, motors, and circuit boards. Over time, that leads to higher repair bills. Surge protection reduces wear and lowers long-term maintenance expenses.
Affordable Protection
Whole-home surge protectors are an affordable, same-day solution. For a fraction of the cost of replacing appliances, you can secure your entire electrical system.
Peace of Mind
With one installation, you protect every outlet, breaker, and device in your home – 24/7, rain or shine.
The right surge protector depends on three main factors:
Surge current rating: This shows the maximum surge the protector can handle. Higher ratings provide better protection.
Clamping voltage: The lower the clamping voltage, the faster the device reacts. Look for a protector with a clamping voltage under 400 volts.
Response time: A good protector reacts in nanoseconds, diverting excess electricity instantly.
Our electricians recommend and install protectors that balance all three – and we’ll size the right unit for your panel, not a one-size-fits-all product.
For additional context, see our article on October electricity check: why a service panel upgrade is necessary.
A whole-house surge protector shields every circuit in your home. Instead of plugging in strips for individual electronics, a single installation covers appliances, HVAC systems, smart home devices, and outlets. The advantages include:
Extended lifespan of appliances and systems
Reduced risk of fire or wiring damage
Financial savings by avoiding replacements
Peace of mind during storms and outages
This is a proactive investment that pays off the first time a surge occurs.
Yes. Surge protectors connect directly to your electrical panel. Incorrect installation can leave gaps in coverage or create fire risks. A licensed electrician ensures:
Proper sizing for your home’s electrical load
Safe installation that complies with NJ building codes
Secure connections to prevent electrical faults
Warranty coverage (many manufacturers require professional installation)
At DK Electrical Solutions, every installation is performed by a Certified Master Electrician.

When installed professionally, risks are minimal. The only real risks come from:
DIY installation (shock, fire hazards, incorrect wiring)
Cheap, low-quality devices that don’t meet UL standards
Improper placement on the panel
We only install surge protectors from trusted manufacturers and follow strict safety protocols. That means your system is safe and effective.
For related safety advice, see the safest way to put out an electrical fire.
Most whole-home surge protectors last 3-5 years, depending on how often they absorb surges. In areas with frequent lightning storms or utility fluctuations, replacements may be needed sooner.
We recommend:
Annual inspection by a licensed electrician
Replacement at least every 5 years
Immediate replacement if the device shows signs of wear or fails a surge
Our team can handle both inspections and replacements as part of routine electrical service.

Derrick and DK electrical solutions are amazing!! We had an electrical wire break underground and struggled for a week to find a company that could dig up the area and solve our problem. He came the day I called and after one long day of hard work, I once again have electricity. He was so incredibly kind, reasonably priced, thoughtful, professional and clearly loves problem solving. Thank you so much for everything. Please call DK for all your electrical needs but especially those that involve underground electrical wiring. Updating in 2026. Just used DK again to diagnose some issues around my house. Bob and George were super kind and knowledgeable. Still super happy with the service.
5 star review. I had a transfer switch and interlock installed on our electric box. Joe and Travis were on time, polite, knowledgeable, worked quickly, and did a great job. They explained everything once they were done. I have used DK Electrical Solutions in the past and will continue to use them.
Had power out in two rooms of the house and they were able to get a technician over same day in the afternoon. Joe went over the pricing with us immediately and gave us a flat rate no matter the time it took or work done. He checked literally everywhere to no avail and then suggested there might be an outlet hidden in our closet. He was right about that and after checking that outlet he fou d the source of the problem. Replaced the outlet and a burnt wire and we have power again! Was super polite and thorough and got the job done thanks to his dedication and skill. If we ever have electric issues again DK will be the first and last place we call to get it solved. Thanks for your help Joe!
He was very perfection, he hung up my lights and they look beautiful Thank you
