A dead or flickering light fixture is usually a bad bulb, failed fixture, loose switch or dimmer, tripped circuit, or upstream wiring. How to sort them out.

Light Fixture Won't Turn On? Work the Problem in Order

A light fixture that won't turn on is almost always one of five things, and they fall in a rough order of likelihood: a dead bulb, a failed fixture, a loose switch or dimmer, a tripped breaker or dead circuit, or a fault in the upstream wiring. Start at the cheap end and move up. Most dead-fixture calls are solved in the first two steps, and you can do those yourself with the switch off.

Here's the order we work it on a service call, and the order you can safely follow at home:

  1. Swap the bulb. Put in a bulb you know works, from another fixture that's on. LEDs fail open and give no warning, so a "dead" fixture is a dead bulb more often than people expect.
  2. Check the fixture itself. Look at the socket. A corroded or bent center tab, a cracked socket, or a loose wire nut inside the canopy will kill the fixture even with a good bulb in it.
  3. Test the switch and dimmer. A worn switch or a dimmer that failed can stop passing power. If other fixtures on that switch also went dark, suspect the switch.
  4. Check the breaker and the circuit. A tripped breaker, or a dead outlet feeding the circuit ahead of the fixture, takes out everything downstream.
  5. Look upstream at the wiring. A loose neutral, a backstabbed connection that worked loose, or damaged cable in a junction box is the last and most serious cause.
Stop-and-call rule: if at any step you see scorched or melted wire, a browned socket, a burning or fishy plastic smell, or a warm switch plate, do not keep testing. Shut off the breaker to that circuit and call a licensed electrician. Those are heat and arcing signs, and they don't wait.

You should not open a live junction box or work on wiring in the ceiling yourself. That's where a licensed electrician belongs, and where we diagnose the circuit behind a dead fixture with the switch and breaker off and a meter in hand.

Is It the Bulb, the Fixture, or the Wiring? A Simple Way to Tell

The fastest way to separate a bulb problem from a fixture problem from a wiring problem is a two-part swap test. Move a known-good bulb into the dead fixture. If it lights, the old bulb was the fault, and you're done. If it stays dark, move that same good bulb to a fixture you know works. If it lights there, the problem is in the dead fixture or the wiring behind it, not the bulb.

That single test rules out the most common cause in under a minute. From there the split is between the fixture and everything behind it.

"If a good bulb is dark in one fixture but bright in another, the bulb is fine. The problem is the socket, the switch, or the wire feeding that spot."

Signs the fault is the fixture itself:

  • The socket tab is flattened, corroded, or discolored, so the bulb never makes solid contact
  • The fixture flickers or cuts out when you wiggle the bulb or the canopy
  • Only this one fixture is dead while everything else on the switch and circuit works

Signs the fault is behind the fixture, in the switch or wiring:

  • Several fixtures on the same switch or circuit died at once
  • The breaker for that circuit is tripped, or trips again right after you reset it
  • Other outlets or lights on the same circuit are also dead
  • You see, smell, or feel heat anywhere along the run

A tripped breaker that trips again the moment you reset it is a message, not a nuisance. Something on that circuit is drawing a fault, and forcing it back on is how you turn a wiring problem into a fire. Leave it off and get it diagnosed.

New Light Fixture Won't Work After You Installed It

A brand-new fixture that won't light after a DIY swap is usually a connection mistake, not a bad fixture. The most common one we get called out for is a hot and neutral reversed or a ground left off at the box. Wire-nut connections that look tight but aren't fully seated are next, especially where a thin fixture lead meets a heavier house conductor. And on a switch-loop, it's easy to land the fixture on the wrong pair so the switch never actually breaks the hot.

One more thing on older homes: if your house is a 1960s or 1970s South Jersey build and you find aluminum branch wiring at the fixture or switch, stop. Aluminum at a device not rated for it is a known arcing source, and it needs correct connectors and a licensed hand, not a standard wire nut.

If you installed a fixture and it won't come on, turn the breaker off, pull the fixture back down, and confirm the connections are matched and seated. If it still won't work with clean, correct connections, or you're not certain which conductor is the switched hot, that's the point to have a licensed electrician install or replace the fixture and verify the box.

When a Dead or Flickering Fixture Is Actually the Whole House

There's one pattern that isn't about your fixture at all. If a single light flickers, that's a fixture, bulb, or switch problem. But if lights across several rooms flicker, dim, or brown out together, especially after a storm or a utility outage, the problem may be on the service side. A flicker after a utility outage means checking the service neutral, not just resetting breakers.

A fixture that flickers and then dies usually points to a bad connection somewhere in that fixture's path, not a bad bulb. The most common causes are a loose wire at the fixture or switch, a worn socket tab that's losing contact as it heats up, or a failing switch or dimmer. A flicker that ends in the light going fully dark, especially if you can trigger it by touching the switch or fixture, is a loose or arcing connection, and that carries a fire risk. Nine times out of ten it's a connection, not a defective fixture. Turn the breaker off, drop the fixture, and confirm hot to hot, neutral to neutral, and ground landed, with every wire nut fully seated on both conductors. On a switch-loop, make sure the fixture is on the switched hot, not the constant one. If the connections are correct and it still won't light, or you can't tell which conductor is switched, that's the point to have a licensed electrician verify the box and set the fixture. Don't leave a half-made connection energized.
