Light Buzzing, Crackling, or Humming When You Turn It On? Here's What It Means
A buzzing light is usually a dimmer-and-bulb mismatch. A crackling or popping sound at the fixture or outlet is arcing, and it needs to be checked right away.
Why Is My Light Buzzing When Turned On?
A light that buzzes the moment you flip the switch is almost always a mismatch between the bulb and the dimmer or switch feeding it. The current is chopping the power on and off fast, and the filament or LED driver vibrates at that frequency. You hear it as a hum or buzz. It's annoying, but on its own a steady buzz is usually not a fire risk.
That said, the sound is still telling you something. A cheap LED on an old rotary dimmer buzzes because the two were never meant to work together. A magnetic transformer feeding low-voltage halogen pucks hums for the same reason. And sometimes the buzz isn't the bulb at all. If your buzzing started right after you switched to LED bulbs, the dimmer is the likely culprit. Old dimmers were built for incandescent loads that pull a smooth, steady draw. LEDs pull a fraction of that power and do it in fast pulses. A leading-edge dimmer trying to control a tiny LED load buzzes, flickers, or won't dim smoothly across the range.
The fix is almost always a compatible pairing, not a repair. - Check the dimmer for an "LED" or "CFL/LED" rating. An incandescent-only dimmer will fight a low LED load.

- Watch the dimmer's minimum load. A single 8-watt bulb can fall below what a dimmer needs to run cleanly.
