Smart Home Automation Wiring in South Jersey, Done by a Master Electrician

← Back to all services

You want to run lights, outlets, and a thermostat from your phone or a voice assistant, and you need the wiring done right so the gear actually works. That is the job we do. DK Electrical Solutions wires the electrical side of smart home automation across Burlington, Camden, and Mercer Counties: smart switches, dimmers, smart outlets, lighting controls, and thermostat wiring integrated into the circuits you already have. We are electricians, so we handle the part most homeowners get stuck on, the neutral runs, the box depth, and the dimmer-to-LED compatibility that decide whether a smart switch works or buzzes.

We are a family-owned firm with NJ Master Electrician License #17216 on every job, serving South Jersey since 2011. A Master Electrician sizes the work against your real circuits, pulls the township permit when the scope calls for one, and the local municipal inspector signs off. You pay an upfront flat rate, never by the hour, so you know the number before we start. One thing to be clear on: we wire the controls, we are not a security-system or home-theater integrator. If you want the switches, dimmers, outlets, and lighting that a smart home runs on wired to code, that is exactly what we do.

Smart Home Automation, Wired the Right Way

Smart home automation, on the electrical side, is the wiring and devices that let you control lighting and plug-in loads from a phone or a voice assistant. We install the smart switches, dimmers, smart outlets, lighting controls, and thermostat wiring, and we integrate all of it with your existing branch circuits so nothing has to be torn out and rebuilt.

What we wire: smart switches and dimmers, smart and app-controlled outlets, multi-fixture lighting scenes, and the low-voltage wiring a smart thermostat needs. What we do not do: security cameras, alarm monitoring, or home-theater integration. We are electricians wiring the controls, not a device-integration company.

The reason to have a licensed electrician do this, rather than buy a switch and hope, is that the common failures are electrical. A smart switch that reboots every night, a dimmer that buzzes on LED bulbs, a thermostat that will not hold a schedule: those are wiring problems, and they are the exact problems a Master Electrician diagnoses on-site before quoting. Get a flat-rate quote and we will tell you what your walls actually need.

Smart Switch and Dimmer Installation

A smart switch or dimmer install is usually a one-visit job once we confirm the box has what the switch needs. Most smart switches require a constant neutral at the switch box to stay powered, and many older South Jersey homes wired before about 1970 ran the switch loop without one. We check that first, because it decides the whole job.

Here is what the install actually involves:

  1. Verify the box. We confirm there is a neutral, enough box depth, and a ground. If the neutral is missing, we price running one as part of the same flat rate.
  2. Match the dimmer to the load. LED fixtures are picky. We pair the dimmer, including Lutron Caséta where it fits, to your actual bulbs so you get a full dimming range with no flicker or buzz.
  3. Handle multi-way switching. Three- and four-way locations need the right smart switch and the right traveler wiring. We set these up so every switch in the group, plus the app, controls the same light.
  4. Terminate and test. We re-terminate on copper, label the circuit, and test the switch on the app and by hand before we leave.
We don't backstab a smart switch and walk away. If the LED flickers at low dim, the dimmer is wrong for the bulb, and we fix that before it becomes your problem.

For new fixtures going in alongside the controls, we pair smart dimmers with new interior light fixtures in the same visit so the lighting and the control are matched from the start.

Smart Lighting Controls Wiring

Smart lighting controls are where automation earns its keep: one tap runs a whole room or a whole floor. We wire multi-location controls and scene-capable switches so a single command dims the living room, kills the kitchen, and sets the hall, instead of you walking to each switch.

LED compatibility matters: mixing dimmer types across LED fixtures is the top cause of flicker we get called to fix. We match the control to the fixture load on the on-site assessment so the scenes actually behave the way the app shows them.

Whole-room and multi-fixture controls often mean running new conductors between boxes or back to the panel. In a finished home we fish those runs from accessible attic and basement access the same way we handle historic-home rewires, without trashing plaster walls. When the scope adds or reworks a circuit, that work is permitted and the local municipal inspector signs off. Call (609) 796-4177 and we'll scope the lighting controls your layout can support.

Adding Smart Wiring to Older South Jersey Homes

This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is yes, in almost every case, but the older the house the more the neutral decides the plan. Burlington and Camden County have a heavy mix of 1950s through 1980s builds, plus pockets of pre-1950 housing with knob-and-tube wiring. The switch loops in those homes frequently have no neutral, which is exactly what most smart switches need to stay powered.

We handle that three ways, depending on what the box gives us:

  • Run a neutral. Where there is accessible attic or basement access, we pull a neutral to the switch so a standard smart switch works. This is the clean, permanent fix and it is often part of a broader wiring and rewiring job.
  • Use a no-neutral-required device. Some switches and dimmers are built to work without a neutral. Where that is the right call, we use one and skip the new run.
  • Control at the fixture or outlet. Smart bulbs, in-fixture modules, or smart receptacles on a dedicated or existing circuit let us automate a room even when the switch box truly cannot be changed.
When smart automation is the wrong call: if your switch boxes have no neutral and no accessible path to run one, and you are not interested in no-neutral devices or smart bulbs, forcing a wired smart switch gets expensive fast. A plug-in smart plug or a smart bulb will do the same job for a fraction of the cost, and we will say so on the estimate rather than sell you a wall-opening you do not need.

Knob-and-tube circuits are a separate conversation: those usually need to be replaced for safety before we add any controls, and we will scope that honestly. If your home has knob-and-tube, we handle the replacement as its own permitted job, then layer the smart controls on top of safe, modern wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do smart switches need a neutral wire?

Most do. The majority of smart switches need a constant neutral at the switch box to stay powered and connected to your app, and many South Jersey homes wired before about 1970 ran the switch loop without one. We check the box on the on-site assessment. If the neutral is there, the install is quick. If it is missing, we either run a neutral to the box, use a smart switch designed to work without one, or control the room at the fixture or outlet instead. We tell you which path your home needs before we quote.

Can you add smart home wiring to an older house?

Yes, in almost every case. Pre-1970 Burlington and Camden County homes often have no neutral at the switch and sometimes have knob-and-tube circuits, so the approach depends on what the walls give us. Where there is accessible attic or basement access, we run a neutral so standard smart switches work, and we fish those runs without tearing up plaster. Where a run is not practical, no-neutral smart switches, smart bulbs, or smart outlets can automate the same room. If a circuit is knob-and-tube, we will usually recommend replacing it for safety before adding controls, and we will scope that honestly rather than wire controls onto wiring that should be retired.

Is this home security or home automation integration?

No. We wire the electrical side of smart home automation: smart switches, dimmers, smart outlets, lighting controls, and thermostat wiring tied into your existing circuits. We are a licensed electrical contractor, not a security-system or home-theater integration company. We do not install cameras, alarm monitoring, or AV racks. If you want the switches, outlets, lighting, and thermostat wiring that a smart home runs on installed to code and inspected, that is exactly what we do.

Which smart switches and dimmers do you install?

We install the device you choose and match it to your fixtures, and we commonly use Lutron Caséta dimmers because they pair cleanly with LED loads and multi-location setups. The brand matters less than the fit: a dimmer has to be rated for your actual LED bulbs or you get flicker and buzz. We confirm compatibility on-site and, if you have not picked a device yet, we will recommend one that works with your wiring and your lights.

Do you pull a permit for smart home wiring?

It depends on the scope. Swapping an existing switch for a smart switch in a box that already has a neutral usually does not change the circuit. Running a new neutral, adding a circuit, or installing new outlets or lighting does, and that work is permitted and signed off by your local municipal inspector. A NJ Master Electrician is on every job either way, and when a permit applies, the flat rate we quote already includes it and the inspection.

Can you wire a smart thermostat?

Yes. Smart thermostats need low-voltage control wiring, and most of them need a common (C) wire that older heating and cooling systems were never wired with. We run or correct that wiring so the thermostat holds power and keeps its schedule instead of dropping offline. We wire the thermostat connection; any work on the furnace or air handler itself stays with your HVAC contractor.
