The single most useful thing to understand about a GFCI is this: when it refuses to reset, it's almost always doing its job. A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) watches the current going out against the current coming back, and the instant it sees a mismatch as small as a few milliamps leaking to ground, it cuts power in milliseconds. That's the difference between a shock and a fatal one near water. So a reset button that pops right back out isn't a broken outlet acting up. It's a device catching something, and the fix is finding what.
There are really only four reasons a GFCI won't stay set: it isn't getting power in the first place, it's tripped by a device downstream of it, moisture has gotten into the box, or the GFCI itself has worn out. We'll walk each one, tell you what's safe to check yourself, and be straight about the point where you stop resetting and call a licensed electrician instead. The Four Reasons a GFCI Won't Reset
Before you touch anything, know that a GFCI protects a whole run, not just itself. Wired correctly at the first receptacle on a circuit, one GFCI protects every standard outlet downstream of it. That's why a "dead" bathroom or garage outlet with no test buttons is so often just downstream of a GFCI that's tripped somewhere else.
1. No power reaching the outlet. If the reset button won't click and stay in and there's no faint pop at all, the circuit may simply be dead. A tripped breaker in the panel, or another GFCI upstream that fed this one, cuts power before it ever reaches this device. Check the panel first. 2. A real ground fault downstream. Something plugged into this outlet, or into an outlet fed by it, is leaking current to ground. A failing hair dryer, a cracked appliance cord, a space heater with water in it. The GFCI sees the leak and holds the circuit open. 3. Moisture in the box. This is the one we trace most on outdoor and garage receptacles. Water sitting in the box, or a cracked weatherproof cover, creates the exact ground path the GFCI is built to catch. 4. A worn-out device. GFCIs have a service life of roughly 10 to 15 years. Past that, the internal sensing components lose accuracy, and the reset mechanism itself can fail. A unit this old that suddenly won't reset has often just reached the end.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself
Here's what's genuinely safe for a homeowner to do before calling anyone. None of this involves opening a box or touching a wire.
- Unplug everything on the circuit. Pull every cord from the GFCI and from any outlet that went dead with it. Then press reset. If it holds now, one of those devices had the fault. Plug them back in one at a time until it trips again, and you've found the culprit. - Look for the upstream GFCI. A dead bathroom or basement outlet with no buttons is often downstream of a GFCI in another room. Check every bathroom, the garage, the kitchen counter, and any outdoor receptacle for a tripped test/reset button, and reset that one. - Check the panel. Open the breaker panel and look for a breaker sitting halfway between on and off, or one labeled GFCI/AFCI with a tripped indicator. Reset it fully off, then on. - Check for water. On an outdoor or garage GFCI, look at the cover and the box for moisture. If it trips every time it rains, that's your answer, and it needs sealing, not resetting.
If unplugging everything and clearing the obvious causes gets it to reset and stay set, you're done. That was a device fault or a nuisance trip, and it's fixed.
How to Fix a GFCI Outlet: Where the Line Is
Here's the part most articles won't tell you plainly. There is a hard cutoff on how many times you should try to reset a GFCI, and it isn't about the device wearing out. It's about what the device is telling you.
If the GFCI resets after you unplug the obvious culprit, you fixed it. If it will not reset after you've unplugged everything and checked for moisture, stop. Do not keep jamming the button, and do not "fix" it by swapping in a standard outlet with no protection. A GFCI that holds open with nothing plugged in is reporting a ground fault in the wiring itself, and that's not a homeowner repair. It means current is leaking somewhere inside the walls, the box, or a junction, and finding it takes a meter and a license.
That's the counter-intuitive truth: a GFCI that trips repeatedly isn't a nuisance to be defeated, it's the cheapest smoke detector you own for a wiring fault. Bathroom GFCI Keeps Tripping? What's Actually Going On
A bathroom is the highest-moisture, highest-risk room in the house for ground faults, which is exactly why NEC 210.8 requires GFCI protection on every bathroom receptacle. When a bathroom GFCI keeps tripping, the causes cluster tight:
- A failing appliance. Hair dryers, curling irons, and electric razors are the usual suspects. Heating elements degrade and start leaking current, and the GFCI catches it before you do. - Moisture behind the plate. Steam from the shower finds its way into the box over time, especially in older homes without an exhaust fan doing its job. - An aging device. A bathroom GFCI installed in the early 2010s is now at the edge of that 10 to 15 year window and losing sensitivity. - A downstream fault. In many 1950s through 1980s South Jersey homes, one bathroom GFCI feeds the outdoor receptacle or a second bath, so the trip may originate somewhere you can't see.
Most of the homes we open across Burlington and Camden County went up between the 1950s and the 1980s, before the code reached half these rooms, so the bathroom is frequently the one place a GFCI was ever added at all. If tightening the check to that room doesn't isolate it, the fault is on a run you can't safely chase. Summer thunderstorms are hard on outdoor and garage receptacles. Wind-driven rain gets under a cracked weatherproof cover, lightning surges stress the sensing electronics, and the humid stretch off the Pinelands edge keeps moisture in boxes that never fully dry out. A GFCI that trips clean all winter and starts nuisance-tripping in July usually has a moisture path, not a bad device. That's a trace-and-seal fix, often in a single visit, and it's the difference between a receptacle you can trust with holiday lights or a sump pump and one you can't.
