Attic fan, bathroom exhaust fan, and whole-house fan solve three different problems and wire three different ways. Here's how to tell which one your home needs.

The Word "Fan" Is Doing Too Much Work

People call us asking for "a fan installer," and the first thing we do is figure out which fan they mean, because there are three completely different jobs hiding under that one word. An attic fan exhausts heat out of your roof space. A bathroom exhaust fan pulls moisture out of a wet room and ducts it outside. A whole-house fan moves cool evening air through your living space. Same word, three devices, three ways they get wired, and three different circuits behind them. Here is the plain version before the detail. If the problem is a baking attic and hard-working AC, that is an attic or gable fan, mounted on the roof deck or in a gable end and switched by a thermostat and humidistat. If the problem is steam, mirror fog, or mildew in a bathroom, that is a bathroom exhaust fan, ducted to the exterior and often run off a timer or humidity switch. If the problem is muggy evening air you would rather flush out than air-condition, that is a whole-house fan. One of these is a roof job, one is a wet-room job, and one is a living-space job.

Attic Fan vs Exhaust Fan

An attic fan and a bathroom exhaust fan both move air out of the house, and that is where the similarity ends. An attic fan moves heat: it mounts high on the roof deck or in a gable end, kicks on around 100 to 110 degrees via a thermostat, and blows superheated attic air outside so it stops radiating down into your top floor. A bathroom exhaust fan moves moisture: it mounts in the bathroom ceiling, ducts through a rigid or insulated run to a wall or roof cap, and clears steam and humidity so you do not grow mildew behind the tile. Different location, different trigger, different air.

The wiring tells the two apart as clearly as the job does. An attic fan is usually a low-draw motor that can share an existing attic-lighting circuit, though we always confirm that against the actual breaker before we tie in, and larger units get a dedicated 20A circuit with a thermostat-and-humidistat control. A bathroom exhaust fan is a small load too, but it has its own switching logic, a wall switch, a timer, or a humidity sensor, and in a full bath it often shares a switch bank with the light and needs correct GFCI protection depending on where the circuit lands under NEC 210.8.

> The mistake we see most: someone buys a big roof-mounted attic fan hoping it will clear the shower steam that keeps fogging the mirror, or buys a bathroom exhaust fan hoping it will cool a scorching attic. Each does the other one's job badly, or not at all.

There is a mounting rule that applies to both, and to ceiling fans, and it is the one homeowners never hear until something falls. Any fan hung from a ceiling box needs a fan-rated support box or brace built to carry a moving, vibrating load. A standard light-fixture pancake box is not rated for it. We never hang a fan off a plain pancake box, and when we open a ceiling and find one already doing that job, we replace it with a rated box before the new fan goes up. That is not an upsell, it is the difference between a fan that stays on the ceiling and one that works loose over a couple of summers.

Do I Need an Attic Fan or a Bathroom Exhaust Fan?

Start with where the problem actually is, not with the product. If your upstairs runs hot every afternoon while the downstairs is fine, your AC never seems to catch up, and your attic feels like an oven when you poke your head up there, that is an attic-fan problem. If your bathroom mirror fogs and stays fogged, the paint is peeling, you smell mildew, or there is no exhaust fan in the room at all, that is a bathroom-exhaust problem. They are not interchangeable, and honestly most homes that call us need one addressed now and the other flagged for later.

### When You Do Not Need Us Yet

We will tell you straight when the answer is "not yet." If your attic already has a full ridge vent, balanced soffit intake, and your upstairs holds temperature fine, you probably do not need a powered attic fan bolted on, and adding one to a leaky attic can actually pull conditioned air up out of your living space and waste the AC you already paid for. And if your bathroom exhaust fan runs, moves air you can feel at the grille, and actually clears the mirror in a few minutes, it is doing its job, replacing it buys you nothing. Exhaust Fan Installer in South Jersey

When people search for an "exhaust fan installer," they usually mean the bathroom kind, and the part that separates a real install from a builder-grade slap-up is the duct routing and the electrical, not the fan itself. A bathroom exhaust fan has to duct all the way to the exterior, through a wall cap or a roof cap, with as little sag and as few turns as possible, or the moisture never actually leaves the house. In a lot of the older Burlington and Camden County homes we open, the previous fan vented into the attic or into a soffit, which just relocates the mildew problem instead of solving it. The electrical side is where the license matters. ### Does an attic fan need its own circuit?

Not always. A small thermostat-controlled attic fan is a light load and can often be wired onto an existing attic-lighting circuit, as long as that circuit has spare capacity and the breaker checks out.
